April 1917 was a bad month for the Royal Flying Corps during which they lost 245 aircraft and had 207 aircrew killed. ‘Bloody April’, as it became known was a result of the aerial war during the Battle of Arras. To support the ground offensive the Royal Flying Corps deployed 25 squadrons, totalling 365 planes which did not fare well against a smaller but more efficient and better trained German air force whose Albatros fighter plane surpassed anything the British had. John Proud died from wounds, after having been shot down and captured, on 6th April, 1917, while flying with 27th Squadron but as yet there is no further information concerning his death. |
